(The Frisky) -- When I try to explain my ardor for HBO's trashy-fabulous soap opera "True Blood" to my dude friends, they either shrug and change the topic, or question whether I've been writing for ladyblogs for too long and am suffering from a form of Stockholm Syndrome.
Dudes just don't dig bloodsuckers, since vampires pretty much look like girls. We prefer zombies, because we love chainsaws, flamethrowers, and samurai swords.
And because, on some level, we know that besides being vehicles for sperm, our other important, if lesser, genetic imperative is to defend our loved ones from hordes of unthinking, flesh-eating metaphors for current social anxieties.
To most guys, vampires are the monster movie equivalent of that sensitive man-sponge in college who plays acoustic guitar in order to seduce chicks. They're what you get when you cross your average Renaissance Fair enthusiast with a mosquito.
And what's with their greatest weaknesses being most kinds of Italian food, Sunday school, and the sun, which helps flowers grow? Really? Why women find date-rapey parasites who wear capes compelling must have something to do with deeply primal fears.

Alan Ball talks 'Fresh Blood'
From The Advocate
With True Blood a bone-fide cultural phenomenon, producer Alan Ball offers tantalizing hints about what to expect on season 3.
Out writer-director Alan Ball continues to win over the hearts of LGBT audiences, first with his Academy Award–winning screenplay for American Beauty, then with HBO's critically acclaimed and Emmy-winning drama Six Feet Under. Now, with two seasons of his intoxicating vampire drama True Blood under his belt, the writer and executive producer of the HBO fanger, based on Charlaine Harris’s Sookie Stackhouse novels, paused ahead of the October 28 Paley Center for Media writers roundtable to discuss staying true to the source material, why gay audiences love their vampires, and the slate of gay characters set to join the drama's third season next year.

Sam Trammell: 'I Consider Charleston Home'
A West Virginia native says he is no overnight star.
"I've been kicking around," Actor Sam Trammell said on Monday's MetroNews Talkline. "I've been paying my dues for many years."
Those dues have paid off for Trammell who grew up in Charleston.
Trammell now plays Sam Merlotte on HBO's True Blood, a popular show about vampires based on Charlaine Harris' novels. "A lot of people look at these vampires in our show as metaphors for any sort of downtrodden group that wants to assimilate and have equal opportunities," he says.
True Blood is just the latest television series for Trammell who got his start in theater in New York City. He has performed on and off Broadway and was nominated for a Tony Award in 1998. Since then, he has made appearances on shows like Law and Order: Criminal Intent, Medium, House, Bones and Judging Amy.
He has also worked on several independent films.

'The Vampire's Assistant' and 10 other reasons why we really dig vampires in 2009
Maybe it's a 21st century anomaly, but for some reason, w
e can't stop sinking our teeth into vampires. Vampire shows, vampire films -- they're all around. The nation loves them and the love affair doesn't show any signs of fading. Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant, just opened, generating more buzz. But take note of 10 other things that keep our fascination with the big V very O-positive.
10. True Blood
It sucks--in the best way. And we like that. A ratings and critical hit for HBO, it came off of a wildly fascinating if not thoroughly engaging sophomore season. Beyond the delicious creativity here in this well-produced, well-acted and well-written series, the show managed to reboot the culture's vampire cravings. But will season three, premiering in 2010, still keep us interested? Chances are ... we'll bite.
9. The Vampire Diaries
It's not quite as deep, desirable or sexy as HBO's hit, but what the heck, the CW show is worth a look, especially for the teen set. Speaking of ...

Song Sparked Stephen Moyer's Marriage Proposal to Anna Paquin
People magazine
When Stephen Moyer proposed marriage to his True Blood costar Anna Paquin, he looked to his onscreen vampire character, Bill Compton, for a little inspiration.
"There's a song Bill listens to in the car about a white sandy beach," Moyer tells British Glamour magazine in its November issue. "So we decided to go away for a break – to a white sandy beach – and that's where it happened."
Moyer, 39, and Paquin, 27, managed to keep their off-screen romance a secret on the set until an awkward love scene forced the actor to do the honorable thing and 'fess up.
"One of the cast had to do an intimate scene with Anna," says the Brit actor. "I felt it would be so wrong for him to do it, then find out down the line that we were together."
Like many of the couple's fellow costars on the hit HBO series, the cast member's reaction was one of utter shock. "So after 10 months, we had to tell him," said Moyer. "He couldn't believe it!"

Stephen King Plans a Vampire Comic
In March, Vertigo, an imprint of DC Comics, will release the first issue of “American Vampire.” The new series, illustrated by Rafael Albuquerque, will open with a five-issue arc that contains two 16-page stories: one by Scott Snyder and one by a rather more well-known name, Stephen King.
The series will focus on a new breed of vampire through the lens of different eras in American history, above. Mr. Snyder will tell the story of Pearl, who is seeking fame in the jazz age, while Mr. King will focus on Skinner Sweet, the first American vampire who does not fear the sun. Mr. King’s involvement began when Mr. Snyder sent him the series pitch in the hopes of getting a blurb. “He wrote back saying he really liked it and would do a couple of issues if anyone would let him,” Mr. Snyder said

Vampire Diaries shows us the types of vampires!
I promise this won't turn into a Vampire Diaries blog but it is a way to keep sane while we wait for Book 10 and Season 3.
I'm posting this because the discussion between Stephen and Damon in this clip reminds me of talking to Meredith Woerner last night on our Blogtalk Radio special about her new book Vampire Taxonomy.
You can listen to the great show -podcast link on the right.
In the book, she classifies the diffident types of vampires and you can see how the Salvatore brothers are different types in this clip..
"OK....Count Deepak" Haha this show will remain and grow as a hit TV show if they continue the great writing ! Buy her great book for $10 (scroll down for the link) she said if we got together a book club group and wanted to get with her for a chat, she'd be happy to do it. Let me know and we can set up a special blogtalk show.
“Vampire Diaries” episode 7 of season 1 airs Thursday October 29 at 7pm central time on the CW.

Stephen Moyer: ‘Sharp teeth & sucking blood is sexy, man!’
From Mirror UK
Stephen Moyer was the kind of face you recognised, but couldn’t put a name to. Born in Brentwood, Essex, he started acting in his teens, and for years was a jobbing thesp in the likes of Casualty and even acted in films with Kate Winslet (in Quills) and Al Pacino (in 88 Minutes) – steady work, but nothing to put him on our radar.
Then, in 2008, the 40-year-old was catapulted up the fame ladder into the A-list – and it all happened overnight.
‘One minute I was sitting in London reading a fantastic script for True Blood and two days later I was in Los Angeles and being told I’d got the part,’ he recalls. ‘It was incredible. And yes it has changed my life completely.’
True Blood is based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris and was adapted for TV by Alan Ball, a heavyweight screenwriter well respected for his HBO hit, Six Feet Under.
Set in a world where vampires have ‘come out of the coffin’ and live freely with humans, True Blood is a mix of some of the hottest sex scenes on TV as well as a passionate love story to rival Kathy and Heathcliff. Or even Bella and Edward, if we’re talking vamp/human affairs…
Moyer plays 173-year-old vampire Bill Compton who falls for telepathic waitress Sookie, Anna Paquin. ‘I love playing him,’ says Moyer. ‘Bill is this tortured soul... He’s a pariah in terms of the humans because he’s a vampire. But in the eyes of vampires he’s “mainstreaming” – he’s mixing with humans – and they ostracise him too.’
Sookie, Anna Paquin (who won an Oscar at 11 for her role in The Piano), is a human with a gift. ‘She can read people’s thoughts,’ Stephen explains, ‘but with Bill, she can’t – and that intrigues her.’

What's True Blood star Alexander Skarsgard's Type?
From People magazine
When it comes to finding love, True Blood's vampire hunk Alexander Skarsgard is looking for a woman with brains – not fangs! – who likes to laugh.
"A sense of humor is number one for sure," Skarsgard told PEOPLE at the Gucci Icon-Temporary Flash Sneaker store opening in New York City. "Being funny and smart is very important."
Known as the sexiest man alive in his native Sweden, the single actor, 33, is turning heads and causing blood pressures to rise with fans everywhere thanks to his brooding True Blood ego and charming good looks. "It's very flattering," he said of the swooning. "I turn a little pink!"
Though Skarsgard, who's been shooting the film Straw Dogs in Shreveport, La., for the past three months, has been linked romantically to costar Kate Bosworth, the sexy vampire has experienced fervent fan encounters that have ranged from sultry to slightly uncomfortable.

Interview:
Hi Charlaine!
Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!
I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and get your copy of Charlaine’s newest book A Touch of Dead
.
BBB: What are the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of writing?
CH: Challenges? Every day is a challenge. I hate to use a sea metaphor, but being a writer is like being the entire crew of a large ship. To extend that, when you reach your destination in one piece . . . that’s a great reward.
BBB: Do you consider different books paranormal romance or urban fantasy? and do you think it is important to distinguish between the two?
