How’s life as a blonde?
It’s very high maintenance.

It must be...
Yeah it turns out my hair grows really fast and I have really dark hair naturally so, you know, this even the tiniest bit of roots, not okay. But now that we’re wrapped it’s okay because I’m not suppose to look like a natural blonde but not really a fan for sitting still for the hairdresser once every ten days for a couple hours. Makes me feel really vain and nutty.

Do people treat you differently?
It’s such a cliché but yes. I really didn’t think that was going to be the case, but people stare at blonde girls. It’s funny. It’s bright and shiny and it catches the light. Like a magpie.

Do they think you’re less intelligent?
I sometimes get that sense, yes.

Why does the world like vampires so much right now?
The honest answer is I don’t know. I mean they’re dangerous and sexy and most films and TV shows cast very good-looking people which probably helps!

How is it working with your fiancé Stephen Moyer?
He’s great. He’s really talented, and so is every other member of our cast and crew and writing staff and directors I mean, we have, we have such an amazing group of people and it’s a real treat.

How are you enjoying this crazy role?
I’m having a lovely time, thank you very much.

Is it difficult to have an on/off screen relationship with Anna Paquin?
Our relationship obviously started at the beginning of the show. We got together because we loved being together and created the thing in the first place. So I think this might be easier because the crew has grown up with us, watching us as a couple and we feel comfortable with them. So, we are able in some ways to explore an intimacy which maybe some people aren’t able to.

Was it love at first sight?
No, we both were absolutely single and we were doing this job and HBO puts us in the same hotel. We were the only two out of towners as everybody else lived in LA.

And there’s nothing else to do, right?
[Laughs.] That’s right. There was nothing else to do! No, we just had some time off so we started hanging out together and literally finished the pilot, went home and felt very strange not being together suddenly. And I think we were both really surprised about that. Really nicely surprised by that.

Is it hard not to talk about work non-stop?
That’s a good question. I’ve never thought about that. I don’t think we do. Certainly, I’ve got enough going on in my life that work is not my be -all-and-end-all and it certainly isn’t Anna’s. We do talk about that a lot. Of course we do, but it’s don’t think anymore excessively than any other couple.

Are you comfortable with all the racy scenes? Happy with your sock?
I love the sock! Everyone has got a different size sock, as you can imagine.

Fashion & Costuming: Interview with Costume Designer Audrey Fisher

This past year, I had the pleasure of working with Audrey Fisher, costume designer for HBO’s True Blood. As someone who loves fashion, I thought costuming would be closely aligned with the ever revolving door of fashion trends and style as they exist now and in the future. What I found was quite the contrary; costume design and fashion are quite different. Fashion is mask, it tells the story that it’s creator want to tell the world, while costume design goes below the surface to tell an inner story.

Audrey, how did you become a costume designer? What was your inspiration or the force that drove the passion?

From a very young age, I was always making costumes for myself, my friends, and my family. My path to costume design, however, was roundabout. In college, I had actually started toward a career in the literary department of theater studies, but in my extremely academic graduate program I found I was still making costumes in my spare time. It was all connected: I was interested in the way costumes could tell stories. Based on some hats I was making for an art class, a director asked me to design the costumes for her production of Medea at a downtown theater. That’s when costumes became my professional passion, with that first off-off-off-broadway show.

“A Southern Novelist Discusses Her Creative Process: An Evening With Charlaine Harris,” a free event open to the public, will be held at 7 p.m. on Sept. 17 at the SouthArk Gym at 300 S. West Ave. in El Dorado.

Harris, of Magnolia, is a Mississippi native who has been writing mysteries for more than 20 years. She published the Harper Connelly series, the Aurora Teagarden series and the Sookie Stackhouse book on which is based the TV series True Blood.

...So let me cut to the title of this piece: Sookie Stackhouse – and Charlaine Harris – are awesome. With each book, I find myself making notes on exactly why the series works; I can’t vouch for True Blood, not having watched it (yet), but here are my top 5 reasons why Sookie Stackhouse beats the pants off every other vampire-lovin’ heroine on offer:

1. The Setting

Sookie Stackhouse lives in a little town in Northern Louisiana called Bon Temps. Unlike Sunnydale, home of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Bon Temps is not endowed with a local hospital, seaport, airport, military base or university campus as the narrative requries: rather, it genuinely is a small town, and manages to remain so despite Sookie’s many adventures. Despite her strong cast of locals, Harris feels no pressing need to set every single incident in Bon Temps, happily moving events to bigger cities like Shreveport, Dallas and New Orleans; and when she does write about Sookie’s home ground, there’s always a strong sense of local humdrum. People hold grudges; they get married, or engaged, or pregnant; and while these happenings aren’t at the core of the series, they nonetheless glue everything together.

True Blood: Something is afowl (sp) in Bon Temps

Something is "afowl" in Bon Temps and we are getting a little "eggstatic" about the quickly approaching end to the season 2. We don't know "which came first" the Maryann or the egg and we don't have any way to know why the chicken crossed the road.

We don't want the ending to be "over easy" or "scrambled" We are all going to "flock " next week to watch episode 12 and we are hoping that the "yolks" not on us.

I'm sure you have a couple ...

Hoyt is one "hen-pecked" son...
Maryann is cooking up some "chicken soup for their souls"
Jane Bodehouse has eaten way too much of her "chicken-catch-a-whorey"
Looks like birds of a feather do more than "flock" together
I'm thinking it wasn't "chicken little" laying that egg
Maxine has been "cooped-up" for too long
Eric is still "cock of the walk"
Pam has said hardly a "peep" this season
Andy was running around like a "chicken with his head cut off"
but now..my man...is all "poultry in motion
I wonder if no hot water still "ruffles" Maryann's "feathers"
Eggs...you have a "paltry" name...
Sheriff Bud can really "shake those tail feathers"...
Lafayette is finally getting his "pluck" back...

Talk Blood 11.5: what the hell was that on the table in the Sookie House of Horrors ?

We had a great little show last night , thanks to everyone who joined us.

We still didn't get to all the calls, but we will get in everyone next week. We are staying on live for 2 hours immediately following the finale.

The question of the night seemed to be how are they going to tie up all the loose ends in just one more episode. The consensus answer was- they aren't.

A great caller, Tokunbo from Baltimore agreed with @Sookie's description of Gran's house as a 'House of Horrors' but was concerned about the "head" that was on the table.

I think we all agree that it's an animal head a cows or maybe horse head that we see on the table. I did note that this was the only scene this whole season that I thought was truly scary.

Novelist Charlaine Harris sinks her teeth into DragonCon

We had to battle past Starfleet ensigns, storm troopers, the Green Giant and yes, a few members of the undead to reach writer Charlaine Harris during the DragonCon convention this weekend at the Hyatt downtown.

Thanks to the success of the new HBO hit “True Blood,” based on Harris’ series of Southern vampire Sookie Stackhouse novels, the Magnolia, Arkansas resident has become a rock star on the sci-fi/comics convention circuit.

Still, Harris was to sit quietly in the hotel lounge, observing the bizarre buffet of people-watching in front of her completely undisturbed.

Well, until we showed up anyhow.

She’s still getting used to her new celebrity status. Of her packed panel session this summer at Comic-Con in San Diego with Marietta’s “True Blood” executive producer Alan Ball, she told us: “It was hell. “It was so huge and a little overwhelming. And when you have so many TV and movie people around you, there’s a lot of security.”

Thankfully, the author says only one car-load of overly zealous Sookie Stackhouse readers have actually driven to her Southern Arkansas hometown to pay an unscheduled visit.

“But the chamber of commerce lady tells me she gets a lot of calls!” Harris says laughing. “I honestly don’t know what people expect to see. I’m a boring middle class, middle aged wife and mother. There aren’t any vampires and werewolves in my back yard. I just have a very rich inner life!”

Labor Day : A TRIBUTE TO THE VAMPIRE WORKER

Some of you may recall a post I wrote awhile back about vampires entering the workforce. As we’re about to celebrate a national holiday dedicated to the American worker (which originally started in Canada, but I digress), I can’t help but feel a certain pride that vampires can finally stand up and be celebrated alongside their breather co-workers.

I would like to extend my own hearty appreciation to all those who frequent the graveyard shift: the letter carriers who specialize in overnight deliveries, the personal assistants who can type faster than their bosses think, the construction workers who don’t need a forklift. I congratulate the ever growing list of doctors, lawyers and businesspeople who were willing to spend so much time in night school, the tradesmen and artisans who would risk prejudice and loss of patronage by announcing themselves as “vampire small business owners.” Even those whose careers haven’t changed, who provided clandestine services to undead to help us navigate the time before our revelation, but can now openly offer their services.

Of these, there are two individuals I’d like to single out. Chester is a vampire who once resided in Illinois and became involved in the Pullman Strike of 1894, the conflict that would eventually lead to Labor Day to become a national holiday. He still remembers the details vividly, and uses the lessons learned as he now serves as the chief foreman of his own night-based workforce. His employees universally laud him as fair, honest and willing to discuss his employees’ concerns without fear of repercussions.

The other is an undead who has truly gone above and beyond in his choice of employment. Though his modesty led him to make sure he wasn’t mentioned by name, this vampire is a member of the fire department in a major city. Unlike other hazards, fire is dangerous to our kind, and the fact that he’s willing to risk his life alongside the others is a lesson in courage and selflessness we can all admire.

So again, here’s a big thank you to all you honest wage-earners out there. Have a day off. You’ve earned it.
